What would I do if I was in charge of generative AI in higher education?

I was asked this after a talk yesterday, using the gloriously weird framing of me being the ‘AI god’. It’s been on my mind ever since. Here are some ideas for me to come back to later, with a view to developing them further:

  1. Establish a national center for AI in higher education to provide guidance, resources, and support for academics working with these technologies.
  2. Develop a comprehensive framework for the ethical development and use of AI in academic research, teaching, and engagement.
  3. Require all academic institutions to provide training and education on AI for faculty, staff, and students.
  4. Create a network of AI scholars-in-residence to provide expertise and support for academics across different disciplines and institutions.
  5. Fund a series of pilot projects to explore the creative and innovative applications of AI in various academic domains.
  6. Establish a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the study of AI in higher education, with a focus on interdisciplinary and practice-based research.
  7. Develop a set of best practices for the use of AI in academic writing, research, and publishing.
  8. Create a clearinghouse for AI tools and resources specifically designed for academic use, with a focus on open-source and accessible options.
  9. Provide funding for the development of AI tools and platforms that prioritize transparency, accountability, and user privacy.
  10. Establish a taskforce to study the implications of AI for academic labor, including issues of job security, workload, and professional development.
  11. Develop guidelines for the responsible use of AI in student assessment and evaluation.
  12. Create a network of AI ethics committees at academic institutions to provide guidance and oversight for the use of these technologies.
  13. Fund research on the social, cultural, and philosophical implications of AI for higher education and society at large.
  14. Establish a national symposium on AI in higher education, bringing together academics, policymakers, industry leaders, and other stakeholders.
  15. Develop a set of principles for the responsible governance of AI in higher education, with a focus on transparency, accountability, and public engagement.
  16. Create a fund to support the development of AI tools and resources for underserved and marginalized communities in academia.
  17. Establish a working group to study the implications of AI for academic publishing, including issues of authorship, peer review, and intellectual property.
  18. Provide funding for the development of AI-powered tools and platforms to support academic collaboration and knowledge-sharing across institutions and disciplines.
  19. Develop a set of guidelines for the ethical and responsible use of AI in academic administration, including admissions, financial aid, and student support services.
  20. Create a national award program to recognize and celebrate academics who are making innovative and impactful use of AI in their work.
