I’m not sure why discovering the existence of dance notation surprised me so much. After all musical notation is also choreographing bodily movement in time and space, it’s just doing working in a much more restricted spatial register. It’s obvious there would be something like this as a simple fact of the commercialisation and reproduction of dance. How do you claim ownership over a work and enable it to be staged repeatedly unless you’ve written it down? And yet I’m still fascinated by this:
Could this be machine readable? If so could there be a dance LLM? What would generative dance look like?
