It occurred to me when reading this piece on vertical software (i.e. catering to a specific industry) how much accumulated domain expertise Turnitin has by virtue of its place within the sector. The author points out how “Many vertical SaaS incumbents are sitting on troves of highly-valuable, highly-specific customer and industry data. This gives them an edge for building AI products”.
What AI product did TII try and build? A detector. What if Turnitin had pivoted towards AI assessment rather than AI detection? Or AI analytics? Imagine what else could have possibly be done with the data they have in their systems?
I think vertical/horizontal is a useful way of thinking about the GAI software landscape. On paper higher education should be primed for vertical solutions to sectoral problems but with the significant exception of research software that doesn’t seem to be happening.
