Join us on February 1st from 1-4pm on at the University of Edinburgh for an afternoon focused on improving the representation of digital sociology on Wikipedia.
Recently, the distinct “Digital Sociology” page was folded into the “Sociology of the Internet” page on grounds that the fields are synonymous. As digital sociologists, we disagree with this characterization. This hackathon aims to create a new and robust “Digital Sociology” page that accurately conveys the field’s unique perspectives and methodologies.
No prior Wikipedia editing experience is necessary. Training will be provided on Wiki basics and how to create/edit pages. This will be a great opportunity to learn a new skill while helping shape representation of an emerging academic discipline.
We’ll start with an intro workshop, break for refreshments, then work individually or in small groups to draft, edit or expand articles related to digital sociology. Experienced Wikipedians will be available to provide support.
Let’s come together to ensure digital sociology has an independent presence reflecting the exciting work being done in this interdisciplinary field.
If you want to participate remotely, please register and we’ll send joining instructions nearer the time.
