How much are academics paid in different national systems?

I’ve been curious about this since discovering Australian salaries are vastly higher than UK salaries. This recruitment site suggests that UK salaries are actually mid-tier for European higher education which surprised me. It also illustrates different salary ranges across systems. It seems to be sourced from different national associations though there’s at least one obvious mistake, where it suggests associate professors in Sweden have a lower median salary than assistant professors.

This seems more reliable (below) but I’m confused about the discrepancy between Australia/UK on this picture. It converts as £38k average starting salary for entry level lecturer positions in the UK which sounds right, but the Australian figures seem utterly contrary to what I’ve seen and had described to me. The take away point for me from both is that pay in the UK is nowhere near as bad as I’d begun to assume, even if I’m still not entirely confident in my understanding of where it sits internationally.

I also learned this week there are publishing bonuses is parts of French higher education which makes me wonder about benefits beyond core salary. I wonder also how this compares to relative cost of living. The findings about junior/senior ratios are interesting: apparently 4.3 to 1 in China and 1.3 to 1 in Norway at the two ends of the spectrum.
