I have fairly rapidly argued myself out of my enthusiasm for Bluesky. Imagining the enshittification of social media is driven by having bad people in charge is like imagining that the world be fixed if you elect the right people. You can’t solve complex problems simply by replacing the people at the top of the hierarchy. The normative orientation of a section of early adopters and the invite code system will slow the rate at which Bluesky comes to resemble Twitter. But it won’t stop it happening. The problems with Twitter didn’t begin with Musk, even if the platform will end with him.
