The Meteor is an independent media co-op in Manchester, driven by a mission to promote social, environmental, and economic justice. As an alternative and community-based publication, we amplify marginalized voices, challenge power structures, and provide accurate and honest reporting. Our aim is to foster engagement and action by offering research, information, and opportunities for a better future while staying accountable to our local community through transparency and inclusivity.
Writers & Editors
We’re always looking for regular writers and people to join our editorial team. There are many ways you could fit in to this role, and we want to include a variety of people with different skills. The role involves working with the rest of the editorial team to craft and edit articles, developing and implementing our editorial strategy, and mentoring new and existing writers.
Member recruitment & engagement role
Our membership is our greatest asset, and we need to grow and nurture it! The main purpose of this role is to recruit, welcome, engage and retain Meteor co-op members. You’ll be helping to run events, finding out what our members want, and working with the rest of The Meteor Team to put your findings into practice.
Fundraising role
We need more money to make this project work! To grow the org, we need to spend, but we can’t spend if we have no funds! Initially this role will be focussed on securing funding in the short term through grant applications, commissions, donations, etc. The role will transition to supporting our long-term financial goals and planning for financial sustainability.
Training & events / community organiser role
Part of our offer to our members and the wider community is through events and training, and conducting outreach work with community organisations. This role will build our presence as a community-based publication by developing partnerships, campaigns and activities with local groups, beyond purely producing content (but ideally would involve content creation). You’ll also be involved in running events (with some help from other Meteor members).
Social Media role
This role involves running our social media channels and engaging with our followers. You will be implementing and reviewing our social media strategy to increase our visibility and engagement, and exploring new channels for expansion. You’ll be sharing our content as well as that of other relevant media, and you’ll be creating content solely for use on our social media accounts.
Finance & Business Development
We’re doing all we can right now to grow the business (including this recruitment drive!), but we need someone in a designated role to oversee these efforts and keep us on track. You’ll be setting targets and managing the strategy to ensure we meet and exceed them, helping us use our funds effectively, and working with the fundraiser to ensure we’re bringing in the money we need to carry out our work.
Board Members
We need to expand the board to include a representive sample of our membership and the wider community. People with different experiences can bring something special and unique to a board, and the right group of people can bring some proper magic to an organisation! The board oversees the Meteor’s work and ensures we stick to our values, goals and the co-operative principles.
