CONFERENCE ON BIG DATA IN POLITICAL ECONOMY

The Russell Sage Foundation Journal of the Social Sciences invites submissions for its upcoming issue on “big data in political economy.” The aim of the issue and conference is to bring together papers that use big data to answer important political economy questions. Big data refers to large data sets that the IT revolution allows us to gather—both public and private sources of data. The conference organizers welcome papers that use big data to answer questions relating to political economy.

The range of possible topics is broad, including (i) understanding political polarization, (ii) the political influence of campaign contributions, (iii) income inequality and political economy, (iv) the political economy of government regulation (such as health care and financial sectors), (v) the role of networks and political connections in influencing policy, (vi) the use of data to target marginal voters, and (vii) the use of data and technology to reduce corruption and political interference.

The conference and online journal issue is being organized by Atif Mian of Princeton University and Howard Rosenthal of New York University, but all questions should be directed to journals@rsage.org.

Prospective contributors should submit a CV and an abstract of up to two pages of their study no later than May 15, 2014tojournals@rsage.org. Please put “Big Data” in the subject line and address the email to Suzanne Nichols, Director of Publications. Only abstracts submitted to journals@rsage.org will be considered. Each paper will receive a $1,000 honorarium when the issue is published. All questions should be directed to journals@rsage.org.

Selected papers will receive notification by the end of May. A draft of selected papers will be due by September 15, 2014. A conference will be held at the RSF headquarters in New York City in early October. Travel costs, food, and lodging will be covered by the foundation.
