From the edited collection of Alan Clark’s diaries, pg 294:
I still do love the clubbable side. The swinging studded Pugin doors which exclude those unentitled; the abundance of facilities; the deeply comfortable leather chairs at the ‘Silent’ end of the library where one can have a sleep as deep and as refreshing as under the eaves of the Chalet Caroline. There is constant access to snacks, ‘nips’ and gossip. There are excellent and attentive library staff who will do all your work for you.
