Why am I listening to so much techno at the moment?

It was prompted initially by the exhaustion of the final stages of marathon training but I realised what I’m actually enjoying so much is the absence of lyrics. It is music which refuses to make a story of itself. It just goes on and on, with an unapologetic energy and intensity, doing what it does in a quietly furious way. It’s quite different from breakcore, which is the only electronic music I’ve had any interest in for years, in that it has no interest in bending back or deconstructing itself. It just is what it is and it… continues. For someone whose unconscious is littered with the lyrical detritus of songwriters there is something incredibly relieving about music largely lacking identifiable signifiers which demand to be read. It is not raiding the inarticulate but doing something else entirely with it.
