Is the great collapse of trust in credentials happening?

This House of Lords briefing note suggests convincingly that we don’t see evidence of it yet. See also public attitudes about degrees being value for money.

Official statistics indicate that the demand to study for degrees has changed little since the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022.[17] For example, the number of applicants to UK universities in 2025 was higher than the two preceding years and only 0.25% lower than the peak in 2022, although this figure is influenced by numerous factors including demographics and the Covid-19 pandemic.[18] The government’s employer skills surveys also found that the proportion of employers who said that degrees were important increased slightly from 18% in 2022 to 20% in 2024.[19] Similarly, Ofqual surveys found very little change in the proportion of employers reporting degrees as being essential between 2022/23 and 2024/25.[20]

This clearly doesn’t mean there’s no problem though. Surely these are all lagging indicators? My worry is that a collapse of trust could happen relatively quickly, in a matter of years, particularly if it is seized upon as a political fault line by actors who are trying to attack the sector.
