I thought this was a very important, if challenging, observation by Richard Seymour about the elements of incel culture which can be found in (somewhat) mainstream sociological thought:
Even the more specific incel claims have roots in quite mainstream ideology. For example, the notion of “sexual market value” is quite openly a fourth-hand rip-off of Catherine Hakin’s concept of “erotic capital“. The claim that changes to the “mating market” caused the pill, pornography and liberal marriage laws has made a pitiable sexual underclass of most men, allowing 20 per cent of the most active males to have 80 per cent of the sex, is likewise found in mainstream sociology. These sorts of claims gain traction because they appear to describe and explain real developments.
