the ‘via’ link as a continuation of established social practices 

I really like this point made by Finn Brunton on pg 221 of Spam:

The “via” link has interesting parallels with other social practices: the cab driver who recommends a relative’s hotel and then adds, “Tell them I sent you,” or the advertising circular that specifies that the shopper mention where he or she saw the advertisement for a special discount.
